This belt – a Christmas gift for my daughter – has a buckle cast in a cuttlefish bone. It’s a solid, heavy buckle weighing nearly 50g. It’s fully UK hallmarked on the rear.
Cuttlefish casting is easy to do in a home workshop with a decent gas torch, although it is quite smelly. However, if the mould in the cuttlefish bone is prepared well, the inherent structure is developed. This produces a scaly layered pattern that is quite unique.
I’m pleased to have found Ashford Ridge, who provided an excellent service fitting the leather belt to my buckle.
