On holiday in Whitby, I purchased some rough, unpolished, local jet. Jet or lignite is formed by wood decaying under very high pressure. Hence it is similar to coal. I decided to see if I could cut and polish it myself and was successful. Above are some examples of pieces that I have prepared and mounted simply so as not to detract from the jet itself.
