December 2011

Thanks
Thank you all for your interest and support of my work during 2011. It's been an interesting and very busy year with more time to focus on my silverwork. I've got a number of ideas for new directions for next year - so watch this space or even better follow my blog at www.jhsilver.co.uk/blog
Last chances for Christmas presents
If you are local to Oxford and still looking for an original and distinctive present, not necessarily from me, then the Oxfordshire Craft Guild has two selling exhibitions still running. These are at the Oxfordshire Museum at Woodstock during the normal museum opening hours until 3rd January and the Old Fire Station, George Street in the middle of Oxford until 23rd December. Also eight of us will be selling at the Broad Street Market in the middle of Oxford on Sunday 18th December. Please contact me if you need more detail.
2012
For 2012, my next planned event is that I will be exhibiting with Kathy and Richard Shock in Oxford during Artweeks from 12-20th May. More details later.

September 2011

I hope you have had a good summer.  Mine has been very busy on a number of fronts, but one is that I have made significant changes to my website and put much more stock onto the on-line shop.  A feature that I hope you will find useful is the addition of Google Search, so, if you want to look at silver hazelnuts, you can type it in the box and a Google-like page should give you a link to my work.  Unfortunately for me, it also gives other instances on the internet.   However I trust you!  Please take a look at my website.

I’ve had some interesting commissions recently so shortly the next phase of the web work is to update the ‘Examples of my work’ section.  I’ll let you know when that is done.
Please, remember that the Diamond Jubilee hallmark is now available and that, if you want anything special for Christmas, I will need to know soon.

I’ve got a busy programme of events planned to Christmas.

  • Radley College for most of November and early December
  • The Oxfordshire Craft Guild Christmas show at Woodstock from 19 November to 4th January
  • The Old Fire Station in the centre of Oxford from 6th -23rd December with the Oxfordshire Craft Guild
  • Broad Street Market in Oxford on 18th December with other Oxfordshire Craft Guild.
With all of these events, there will be work by others on show and not just silver and jewellery.  There will be plenty to see.

May 2011

A more specific email for my more local friends and customers to remind you that Artweeks in Oxfordshire generally has started, but my exhibition, which is on the Woodstock Road in Oxford with the Shocks as usual, starts on Saturday, 21st May.  You are welcome to the Private View which is from 10:30 on Sunday 22nd.
More details at www.jhsilver.co.uk/shows.html.

I can't be there all the opening times, so give me a call is you specifically want to meet up. Certainly I will be there both Saturdays and Sundays.  Site 345 in the Artweeks catalogue or at www.artweeks.org.  You can see the bee I made on the big roadside Artweeks banners.

April 2011

Having got my workshop more or less complete and taking advantage of an offer of voluntary redundancy (not to be confused with early retirement - though the distinction is fine), in theory at least I find myself with plenty of time to do more silverwork. In practice, you will know that life is not like that!

However, I shall be exhibiting in three places in the next couple of months

(1) Oxford - Broad Street Market - Oxfordshire Craft Guild Stall

Saturday 7 May - Broad Street,Oxford. All day

(2) Oxfordshire Artweeks

Saturday 21- Monday 30 May 2011 - showing at 369 Woodstock Road, Oxford. 12-6pm except Thursday 12-8pm. Please contact me if you would like an invitation to the Private View on Sunday 22 May.

(3) Blewbury, Oxfordshire - Blewbury Festival - St Michael's Church art exhibition

Afternoons of Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 June 2011. Please contact me if you wuould like an invitation to the preview on the Saturday morning.

More details of these events on my website.

I've had some interesting commissions recently. I've made two silver binary abacuses (abaci?) which are on the website, a two-candle candlestick and some leaf brooches for the managers of Burnham Beeches (where the Hazelnuts were first revealed to the world). The latter two will be on the website shortly. I hope to have some developments of the leaf brooches for Artweeks.

As from 1 May, I shall be trading as JJA Radley Ltd, but still branding as John Huddleston- Silversmith

Enjoy the wedding and the May Bank Holiday.

August 2010

Welcome to my first email newsletter for my silverwork.

This is not a wizzy, smart newsletter because the smarter newsletter system introduces loads of advertising which I do not want to bother you with. There will be some however, which I'm not responsible for.

Anyway, a few items of news.

(1)   Along with other members of the Oxfordshire Craft Guild, I will be exhibiting and selling my work at the Jacqueline du Pr Music Building at St Hildas College all day Friday 6th August from 9 to 22:30, Saturday 7th from 9 to 18:30 and on Sunday 8th from 9 till 13:30
 .
(2)   I have learnt a new trick. It is called Keum Boo and is a an ancient Korean method of applying a thin gold film onto silver, effectively like gold plating, but the film is thicker.  I have been wishing I could gold plate for years and this is an easy and quick alternative. There are some examples at www.jhsilver.co.uk/items/Brooches.html#cat (you may have to copy this link into your browser or go to the brooches page on my website).  Look out for more gold decorated work!

(3)   The Abingdon Silver Group starts again in September and I will be running my five week introductory course on silversmithing. There are more details on the ASG website at www.abingdonsilvergroup.org.uk

(4)   Some of you may have seen some of my work at Kelso on Stert Street in Abingdon.  Unfortunately, Kelso has now closed.  Please call me as I do have a range of completed work available and I will be expanding my online shop shortly.

(5)   Finally, if anyone is a member of a group that has guest speakers, I have developed a presentation about silver.  It covers what silver is, how it is produced, what it is used for, all about hallmarking and a little on how to work the metal.  No selling, but no free samples!

I hope the rest of the summer is good for you.

John
